Love is the Answer, Thats What They Say...

Love. It happens at the most unexpected times with the most unexpected people. Love is not something that you can control. It is natural and its something that just happens. Around the world marriage is a topic of great controversy. Whether you should be aloud to marry the same sex. If you should be aloud to have multiple partners. And even if you should be aloud to marry someone of another faith. Not too long ago interracial marriage was frowned upon. Blacks and whites didn’t marry until recently. Why is this topic of such debate if love seems to be so spontaneous and uncontrollable?
All Jewish moms dream of the day they attend their child’s wedding to another Jew. I read an article about interfaith marriage and the Jewish views on it. Many Jews don’t think that you should marry outside of the Jewish faith because if we are trying to keep a Jewish state alive, or just the Jewish people in general, then we need to procreate and have more Jews to pass on our traditions and beliefs.
Many congregations will not perform interfaith marriages. This is less common today than it used to be, but still relevant. Many synagogues are trying to make a more inviting community for interfaith couples as to bring them into the faith. I think that if the concern is loosing Jewish people than the best approach is to make these couples feel welcome instead of casting them out. If you make these couples feel welcome they are more likely to have their children grow up with the Jewish faith. Instead of casting them out, communities should be trying to bring them in.
This isn’t the opinion of a hopeless romantic, because trust me I’m not.
In my personal opinion I don’t even see why there is a debate on the topic. I think that if you are in love with someone it shouldn’t matter what color their skin is, what religion they are from, or what gender they happen to be. To me love is a rare and beautiful thing and when it is found it shouldn’t be controversial.

  1. sometime the non Jewish man you fall in love with has a Jewish soul and converts to Judiasm. Like your dad. Sometimes not.
