Valentine's Day and Judaism

I read an article on Valentine's Day and whether it should be celebrated by Jewish people or not. In my personal opinion I think it is ok. Valentine's Day may have Christian roots, but today it is very much a secular holiday just like Halloween. The idea of giving gifts to the one you love on this day is based on St. Valentine leaving a note behind for his love. While in jail he fell in love with the jailers daughter and before he was executed he wrote a letter to the jailers daughter professing his love and signed it "Your Valentine". This is how the idea of being someones Valentine came about. This idea is based on love. Just because he was a saint doesn't really mean that this holiday sprouted from religious roots. I think that Valentine's Day should be a personal choice. It is up to the person if they choose to conform to the Hallmark holiday or not.

  1. I completely agree with this. The holiday require no religious demands that would infringe on Jewish, or any other religious, rights or practices. Expressing love for one another is a positive thing, and if we are to avoid everything with Christian roots, we would have much.
